Question:
I thought competition from the satellite television business would result in lower prices.
Answers:
Besides previous answers, probably someone is putting money in their own pocket, but who knows...
You may want to consider switching to satellite tv. AllSat has some interesting offers:

You would think so, right? We have Charter with internet, phone, & cable & our bill is $220 a month!
I am seriously considering dropping cable & going to satellite because for that same deal new customers are signing up for only $109.00 a month. When I called Charter, they said that since I am an established customer I don't get that deal, I have to shell out twice as much for the same service!
First the deregulation was set to allow competition between the various cable companies, and this was expected over time to bring the prices down. This was accomplished, however, before the popularity of satellite service. More people switched when the smaller units became available than predicted by the cable companies, and they lost more business/money. Now rather than scale back on the massive salaries paid to their corporate officers, they raise the rates.
