They make money in two main ways:

* Advertising on the site
* Creating a large population of a particular demographic = more advertising/promotion/newslett... advertisement revenue

They may also do data mining, but it depends on what the terms and conditions says.
They may be having banner/contextual advertising and affiliate programs, but these social networking websites are generally over hyped
make some dough just like myspace does.
