There are sites you can PAY to have a website submitted into a category based on KEY WORDS and TOPIC/title ... etc... But I think(although I am not sure) that generally the MOST POPULAR is what the search engines will HOME IN ON...
For example say i have a site on "the blue ridge parkway" ~ I may be fourth on the list as compared to other guys who have more popular sites and so they get more HITS to their sites...
Now, I guess each SEARCH ENGINE does stuff differently as far as how they CATEGORIZE and PRODUCE search results ... The Major SAERCH ENGINES I think all engage in ADVERTISING which involves a motion of YOU being able to place an ad on their website...
