I would like to work in advertising...?

Question:
How would I go about it? I'm about to start college, I need as much information as I possibly can. Yes, I know I'd be working A LOT and that is fine, I can also move or travel a lot, and I am fluent in French and Spanish... working on Mandarin.

Answers:
Well, assuming you're interested in entering the creative side of advertising, as opposed to the account services side, there are a few different ways you can enter the advertising field, depending on what career path you want to take. Like, if you want to work on Nike vs. doing brochures for the local resort hotel.

The most common start is getting a degree in communications from college, which I'm hoping the school you'll be attending offers. (Unfortunately, most college programs don't offer strong portfolio classes so graduates don't typically have "great books," which is a collection/portfolio of work that showcases the person's talents.)

If at all possible, do an internship at a local agency as soon as you're able. More than any class, this will help you determine if advertising is where you'd like to be.

Now, some people continue on to go to an advertising school after they get my degree, which is what I did. Schools like Miami Ad School, Portfolio Center, and Creative Circus focus exclusively on creative fields like copywriting and art direction. They aren't cheap, but students graduate with great books and are fully trained for positions as copywriters. (Most of the "best" agencies in the country recruit from these schools exclusively.)

A third option is to get a job at an advertising agency after you graduate in whatever capacity you can and "work your way" to whatever creative position you want. This is the hardest because most agencies don't typically hire people for creative positions that they feel they have to "train."

Overall, advertising is extremely competitive so having a great book is probably the most important aspect of getting a job once you graduate. Get one and you should be good to go!

Hope this helps! Good luck!
