If you are self publishing, then you can publish your book through a site like Lulu. You can use the global distribution system and get your book included in all of the online bookstores for about $99.
Once you do this, you can create guides at Amazon and promote your book there.
You can also write press releases and articles and submit them to press release and article directories.
Depending on what you write, you should consider offering your work in different formats, as this will allow you to earn additional income.
You should also have a website of your own and offer samples of your writing there. You can offer a list on your site and build a following of readers for your writing.

I would put together an eBook. I think your best potential to sell a lot of books is through eBooks because the chances of getting published by a major company and then selling a lot of books through them is slim to none.

If you are marketing a "how to" or other information product, then you can charge $20 per eBook. You have no publishing cost, per se. But you DO have costs. To get visitors to your site you must advertise it. I recommend Google Adwords.
