Question:
I was fired or job was terminated before the probation period. The reason given was that I did not belong to the place. The only set-back, I think, I had was that I was a beginner for that type of job. I really enjoyed what I was doing and would really like to keep doing that, but my problem is this is the only experience I have related to this career path. What explanation should I provide potential future employers if they ask? Should I even consider placing this experience on the resume? The human resources agent said I could say a lie about the conditions of termination and they would not talk bad about me. Should I follow her advice?
Answers:
First, were you fired or was the job terminated?
Those are two different things and you need to know Exactly what happened.
If you were fired you need to know exactly why and if the job was "terminated" (and I have not heard that terminology before) why.
I don't understand what you mean by "you did not belong to the place"...can you expand? Were you not a "good fit"?
Anyway, that said - there are ways to explain situations without specifically lying. You should not lie, period.
You could say that you enjoyed the work you did there, although you were new to that particular industry or those specific responsibilities and that you had a mutual parting of ways with your employer. In essence you and your employer agreed that this job was not a fit for you.
If the company had other layoffs in addition to you be "let go" then you can say you were part of company layoffs. Done.
With those explanations you could keep the experience on your resume and look for similar or related work.
I dont know about the state you live in.. but here in TX they are not allowed to give out that information..
dates of employment and position held only can be verified..
I would find a crafty way of not going into any detail..due to your short stay with that employer, you should easily be able to downplay its importance.
dont put it on your resume...i have been interviewing lately for some serious positions...i would say..dont led them down any direction that they will ask you a thousand questions about if you dont feel comfortable with any of the answers you'd give.
Just tell them the truth. What happens if you lie and then your next employer somehow finds out about it? Then you'll lose that job as well. I always believe in the truth no matter what. Ask your conscience.
if you lie about it they wont be able to find out.
usually when you put a past job down and all the information about it, they will say that they will call the boss. but legally the only thing they can do when they talk to the boss is ask if you worked their for the time that you said you did. their not allowed to ask why you stopped.
?
"I did not belong to the place"?
What the heck kind of reason is that??
You can lie..that's fine. You can say that the reason you left was for a better opportunity or a budget issue, etc. The new employer will call the old one for a reference only. You old boss cannot say anything negative about you, else he's looking at a lawsuit.
Just b/c you're a poor fit is not a negative on your resume.
If you lied to a superior, stole form the company, didn't along with your peers, or other reasons along those lines I would not put that experience on my resume.
Put yourself in the shoes of a potential hiring employer and if your reason is a negative then leave that position off of your resume.
This is gonna sound realllllly bad..but yes lie. Or, do not put a reason as to why you left. Do not put that you were fired. It doesn't look good. Most people DO lie on their application/resume...if they say otherwise they're lying. =}
If your work performance was lacking.. your last employer cannot TELL them that.. but if your next employer does a thorough background check.. the information about your shotty work performance MUST be disclosed to the inquiring future employer when they go to your last work place and review your file. Most professional organizations KNOW that in order to get the straight scoop on applicants for employment.. they must go to the last workplace In Person in order to find out the run down.
You may be better not admitting your last employment. Then again.. that would be lying as well.
You should never lie to a potential employer or leave off relevant work experience. It will be found out at some point & is grounds for termination (which will give you a worse reference).
Tell the truth or at least be vague in telling the truth. If it was a cultural misfit, tell them what about the culture that you didn't fit with (if it creates a misfit with this employer, too, it's best that you all know about it up front). If it's a skill misfit (inexperience at the job), be honest and tell them that you're very interested in this line of work but that the previous company needed someone who was already experienced who could hit the ground running. Talk to them about how you're excited to gain the experience, any off-hours things (classes or whatever) that you realistically plan to do to increase that knowledge/experience and that you'll be a great employee.
Maybe you could say it was only a temp job in the first place but the job made you realize that you liked that type of job and that's why your applying for THIS job!
