How did you decide on your career path?

Question:
I'm 31 and still don't know what I want to do when I grow up lol...

I trained as a Beauty Therapist but broke my arm badly so for the last 10 years I have worked as a receptionist, and I hate it!! I'm looking to re-train as something...but as what?

Answers:
I would get yourself a nice big notebook and use it to write down some thoughts on some of the following:
- how much money do you think you need to earn in order to live a lifestyle you can be happy with?
- what did you want to do when you were a kid and why?
- What do you enjoy doing in your spare time? Is there anything you could find a way to turn into a job or business?
- is there anything you've always wanted to do but haven't had a chance yet?
- what are your values? What's important to you in a job or in an employer? Do you need to be able to work on your own initiative or be your own boss? Do you want to work as part of a friendly team? Do you need to be creative? Do you want to work for a company with good ethical policies? Do you want to be able to work under pressure and be challenged or do you prefer a more relaxed pace?
- what skills do you have? As well as things like IT skills, consider abilities such as good persuasive powers, ability to put people at ease, being tactful, good with children etc. Think beyond your employment experience and at the rest of your life.
- what would you do if money was no object?

After you've written down some thoughts about all this try going on some of the career websites and investigate a few careers, university courses or companies that reflect some of what you've written. You don't have to make any decision, this is just research - daydreaming if you like, exploring possibilities - this is the place to start.
Inevitably some of what you read will appeal more than the rest, and you will start to get a better idea of your direction - at which point you can start to put together a more structured plan.
Allow yourself space to daydream - it's crucial!
A social Worker or a rottweiler
A policeman or a boxer.
A Barber or butcher.
A Chemist or Drug dealer
The world is your oyster!!!
I worked in a factory for 15 years making compact discs, after a trip to see the WW1 war graves in Ypres, Belgium I decided to give it all up and go back to college. That was in 2003, last week a graduated from university with a an upper 2nd class honours degree in History and in September I start teacher training.
I left school with low grade CSEs and got the job in the factory because my uncle worked there.
I completed my degree, but that did not train me for anything in particular. I looked at what other people did and found what i was interested in (the law). I then did some work experience placements - it did feel a bit odd doing it at that age and not 15, but the employers knew I was responsible and serious about their job. After that i knew what i wanted to do and got the qualifications and am now a lawyer.
Im a medic and I got the idea after being a St.Andrews First Aider. My mum has cancer and after seeing what the nurses do in the cancer unit, I am considering retraining and doing that...

You could try joining clubs, volunteering or doing evening classes at college in different things and see what sparks in interest within you...
First a simple question to you...what do like to do?

Life is to short to work at a job that you hate...pick something that you like to do and worry about the money later. You have to be happy in your job to be successful...and it doesn't matter what your job is. You can make more than enough money in any career!

The secret is that you have to want to be there and put in the time it takes to succeed.

However, you will have a period that you are learning whatever you decide to do...nobody likes this part...but you have to do it. And, once you have learned how it works...you are free to excel and apply your own ideas.

I hope this helps.
