I never took a MT course. I learned OJT (on-the-job-training). I was enrolled in mortuary college, could type well and made A/B in all my science courses. A dept. (Emory U) needed a med. transcriptionist. I'd never heard of it. B./C I could type so well, she taught me. I sure would luv to know what happened to that sweet lady. Anyway, I ended up teaching med. trans. at a medical career college and it IS a big rip-off. These students leave school thinking they're gonna get hired. NOT. Many transcription companies are outsourcing for cheap labor. Don't waste your $$.
I worked as a Med Transcription for over 5 years, and i never took a course.
It depends on who you work for, really. I had medical background and could type pretty fast (i go MUCH faster now, though) and it was a small town doctor who i had a working relationship with. (i worked in a nursing home that he was on staff)
I have heard from collegues that some of those med trans schools are giant rip offs, so make sure you research the ones you are looking at, first.
