What do you think?? (Anyone in HR would help alot here)?

Question:
Ok, I had an interview and it went really well. I got a tour of the place, met the Director of Operations and was there for 2 hours. I got a phone call the very next morning from the HR manager, which was the person I spent most of interview. He said that I did an "outstanding job". This was pretty much what he said to me -> "I want you to know that you are a very stong candidate for this position. Both the Director of Operations and I thought you were outstanding and would be a great fit for our organization. There is one other candidate with a slight edge over you, ONLY because of her background. You do not lack anything that we are looking for. I want you to really be proud of yourself for the interview and keep in mind that you are definately a strong candidate with this position. We'll see where this goes."

What does this mean?! Do I have a chance at this position?

Feedback please??

Answers:
I've used this strategy before when I have a qualified candidate I want and a second, slightly less qualified candidate that I'd also like. While I'm trying to hire that first one who's a little more qualified, I need to keep my options open so I'll make sure the second one is kept interested and this type of language is something I may consider using. None of it is untrue . . . . maybe it's not morally totally upright . . . but you seem to want an honest answer.

There is one other possible answer . . . the HR person likes you better but the DofOps likes the other candidate better. The HR person wants to keep you engaged until the issues with the other candidate plays you. If that falls through, then you're there, eager and ready to fill the position.

I hope this answer doesn't discourage you though . . . sounds like your a great interviewee - so if you don't get this position - keep your head held high.

About 18 months ago, I was told something similar only to learn the other candidate took the position . . . . and with hindsight, it turns out that it worked out better for me . . . .

Also, don't give up your other options / searches until you get something more firm from this company - if it is your #1 choice. You always need plan "B" also!
His feedback is the best that you could get. They like you and it is between you and another person. The other person has a better background. You have a 45% chance of getting the job. Plus they may offer the job to the lady and she might turn it down.
