Is there ever a time when its a good idea to accept a counter offer when you are about to leave an employer?

Question:
been offered a great opportunity in a company in the field where I really need to be. And I know I am going to get a counteroffer, which I know will put me in very good pay bracket together with all the benefits that I already get, which I was going to lose at the new firm.

Answers:
Honestly, whats the problem. You say its the field you need to be in, great opportunity, etc. Of course its a good idea to accept a counter offer if the deal is good. Whats the downside? I can't see any reason, from what you've said, for you not to take the offer.
You should only accept it if you like where you are and don't think they will treat you differently now, knowing you are not loyal to them. If you fear treatment will be different I would go. If you have been there a long time and want to go, you should go. If you haven't been there more than 3 years you might stay just to get more time on your resume. Just some thoughts.
