Difficulty with co worker who's been in the same company for 15+years?

Question:
I work w/ a female co worker, let's name her, Yoohoo. Yoohoo's been working for the same company (15 ys)-doing same job f/ 5 ys. I was promoted into yoohoo's dept. after 3 mo's of employment & now in same job position as yoohoo. BTW, it's 1+ ys-tenure for me & I like the co. 2'nd co worker was added to our dept. 3 mo's ago, & recently added 3'rd in the same position as yoohoo and I. Since day 1, yoohoo's been very inconsistent in her training me and co worker #2. There's currently no official procedures in place, only a "rough draft" which changes almost daily-yoohoo's been working on this for 6 mo's now. Yoohoo does not provide me w/ & co work #2 w/all the info needed to do our jobs. Yoohoo has damaged my reputation w/others. It's been really frustrating. I've asked Yoohoo several times why the training is not consistent? She never gives me a legit answer. I've been wanting to speak w/ boss about this but they value her highly cuz of her ys w/ co. How do you suggest I handle this

Answers:
Just a guess here but I don't really think yoohoo (nice nickname) is a bad person, just not the brightest bulb in the pack. She not utterly incompetant and therefore not going to be fired, but she's not very good at her job (or possibly any job except the most mundane) and therefore she is not going up any higher. So don't really blame her for doing a lousy job training you and your co-worker, she maybe does a lousy job at lots fo things - thats just what she is (also possibly shes mad that she has to train who she possibly sees as a future competitor for her job and therefore shes not terribly thrilled to train you real well).

So to solve your problem you just need to ask alot of questions. Ask other co-workers when you can't get an answer out of her, and ask your boss as needed too. Also just go watch how she does things, and you can usually just page through old reports and stuff and figure out for yourself how it was done in the past. In short, make use of all available resources to figure stuff out and do the best you can when you are not sure - but I'll bet it won't take so long to get the hang of everything (hey if yoohoo can do it, how hard can it be). It may be frustrating for awhile, but you'll figure it all out.

Also, work with yoohoo as best you can. She has been there a long while and is probably doing the best you can and a little friendship goes a long way.

Good luck.
Firstly, let me say you are in a difficult position, but it is resolvable. Secondly, don't look at it as a you versus her scenario. It's more about the boss not giving you the means necessary to be successful at your job.

Tell your boss you don't feel adequately trained to be successful at your job. Then sit back and listen. Is your boss happy with your performance? If not, is it because of the lack of training? Until you know how the boss thinks about your performance, you won't really know if there is an issue.

Remember that your performance is not only a reflection of you, but also the department. And I'm sure your boss doesn't want the department to look bad.
