Information about Post Office Collection Times?

Question:
I need information about the way the postal collection system operates.

1. What does the day symbol engraved on a metal plate screwed above the post box slot, stand for?

Recently I've noticed that there is a MON, TUE, WED, THU (etc...) plate on Post boxes in the local area. What does the day stand for? Does it stand for when mail is collected during postal strikes? Or does it have a more general use?

2.

Is there available a list of post boxes in Boroughs or Councils, together with collection times listed for the post boxes?

Is this list available on the internet. Or how could I acquire one successfully and straightforwardly without being refused or directed elsewhere?

3. Is it possible to collect mail due to be delivered to your address on X particular day, at any earlier time on that day or the day before. (e.g. can I collect mail due for delivery on Monday, on a Sunday afternoon for example as it is being sorted?

4. When will 2nd class mail service be withdrawn?

Answers:
This display and tag system has changed over the last year or two.

It used to be that the large door label on the postbox showed the times of each daily collection, and the small square tag on the postbox door, was changed each time the postman collected the mail, to show the time of the NEXT collection.

Today, the system has varied, so that the large display only shows the time of the LAST collection of the day. So when the postbox is emptied, the postman changes the tag to show the DAY that the NEXT collection will be made.

I am told that there may be other collections from the box if it suits the sorting office, but the only guaranteed collection is the last one (or only one!) shown for that day.

A short while ago, Royal Mail (under one of its other names) had stopped showing any information about the next postal collection, but so many people (me included) complained that they did not know if the box had been emptied or not, that they decided to reinstate the display of NEXT collection.

At the bottom of the large display label on the postbox is information about where to go to find the latest postal collection for the day; this will often be the local sorting office or main post office.

I imagine that the local sorting office will be able to give you a list of collection times from postboxes in your area, and it may indeed be available on the INET. Try searching for Royal Mail.

I have found that the sorting office does reply to mail from users, and the easiest way of contacting them is to drop an unstamped letter addressed to the Manager of the Sorting Office into the postbox.

I do not know if secondc lass mail will be withdrawn, after all it was a service suggested and promoted by the Royal Mail themselves.

I understand that mail can be collected from the sorting office, personally, and if your delivery is inconveniently late in the day, you might like to do so, but I am not so sure about collecting it a day early, as sorting continues long after the offices are closed to the public. The times and cost of this service are contained in the guidebook that you find at most post offices.
4 We haven't had a second class mail service for nearly a year now! As to the rest of your questions, I'm sorry but I don't know, have you tried putting the post office in google and see what comes up? I seriously doubt that you could fetch your mail earlier, unless a P.O.Box address had been used.
Many years ago you had the collection times on a white plate
Example Only (DO NOT Know correct collection times)

1 8am
2 12noon
3 4pm
4 5:30pm (Usually the last collection of the day)

The number 1 to 4 were small plates to advise collection times
