Answers:
It depends on the Macy's in question. According to the article cited below (dated 7/27/2007), Macy's in Chicago is not doing well:

"The chain from New York unveiled a swath of marketing initiatives on Thursday aimed at attracting more customers to the Macy's State Street flagship in Chicago, its second-biggest department store, after New York's Herald Square, and a place many shoppers have avoided since it changed its name from Marshall Field's in the fall".

"It has been a tough week for Macy's in Chicago".

I know that Macy's bought out Robinson's-May and they have been struggling. They have been having sales all the time hence, I've been shopping there more often.
