Question:
I have a few items on my credit report which I had nothing to do with. I had my identity stolen about a year ago and someone opened a line of credit up in my name. Now this stuff is on my report and I can't get it off. Please Help!!
Answers:
You can dispute the accuracy of any derogatory trade lines with the credit bureaus. The credit bureaus will send your disputes to the creditors. They, in turn, hav 30 days to respond. If they do not, the derogatory trade lines will be removed.
Good Luck.
Contact the credit bureau and file a formal dispute. It is then up to the reporting institution to provide proof and if/when they don't you automatically win and the negative reporting will be removed.
Hopefully you filed a police report. If not, you have your work cut out for you. You are going to have to prove that your identity was in fact stolen. A police report could clear this right up. Build your case, find your proof and then send copies of it to the credit bureaus. If you give them all the facts and leave no room for doubt they will delete the accounts. Hope this helps. As a matter of fact, called the credit bureaus directly and ask them what the procedures are. They will probably send you a fraud packet or something to fill out. But at least you can get the ball bouncing.
