Question:
I recently found paperwork that suggests an accidental death insurance claim was filed a few years ago by a relative, but I cannot find any paperwork on what happened with the claim. I think something was paid out, but don't know how to go about finding out. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Call the claims department of the company. You will have to prove that you have the right to the information. You were not a party to the claim, so they don't have to talk to you. If you are the executor of the estate, or the guardian of your relative, you will have to furnish written proof. If you are just curious, but have no legal right to the information, you won't get anywhere.
ps- the claim # should be on all the correspondence.
I don't think you can. Claim information is not public information.
Well, you'll need to get authorization from the executor of the estate, or a probate judge, then you can contact the insurer mentioned in the paperwork, fax over your authorization, and they should tell you.
If you don't have the authorization, no one is going to tell you. It's a private transaction, subject to the privacy laws. There's no central database, either.
