Question:
I sent in my disability paperwork for Aflac. I am currently 9 months preg and left work on July 2 for my 4 wks of disability before the baby. I just received my denial letter from Aflac for my short term disability. I am very angry and feel like I have been lied to. This policy was and is supposed to cover me thru my pregnancy. The only limitations that are stated is that if I am preg before my policy begins I am not eligible.Well I signed up over a year ago and my one year anniversary is Aug 1. I have not had her yet.
Can anyone tell me why I would be denied..My letter states something about me not having any complications with my pregnancy, that has nothing to do with my policy.

Your policy also - more than likely states that there is a 9 month wait before you can get pregnant - for the policy to pay for normal maternity disability - however, if you have complications it may pay.
This is the problem with these indivdiual products that are sold to groups - the employers need to get rid of this type of coverage and move to "true group" which does not have wait periods except for pre-existing conditions.
You need to read your policy carefully. If you have a local agent, I suggest stopping by to go through your policy with your policy executive. They can help you sift through all the insurance jargon and help you understand this letter.
I'm wondering if maybe your policy does not consider pregnancy and post-pregnancy down-time as a "disability." That might be why they wonder if you were injured during child birth. I know for a fact that not all states allow women to take short-term disability leave to cover pregnancy, birth, and postpartum recovery. You need to talk to the person who sold you your policy asap.

OK, what's the disability you're claiming? Pregnancy isn't a disability, in and of itself. Normally, you can work until you give birth.
Sounds like you're being denied, as you don't have a "disability" with relationship to this pregnancy. In other words, it sounds like the 4 weeks off before the baby, were VOLUNTARY, and not medically necessary. THAT'S why they're declining.
It would be a different matter if you were on doctor ordered bedrest.
I'm not familiar with AFLAC, but as a general rule within all disability companies, pregnancy claims begin on the date of delivery. Any claim for time before delivery must be medically neccessary (such as emergency bedrest for multiple births or other medical issues). This is called "complications" of pregnancy, which sounds like what your letter is stating. You will be eligible to file your claim for benefits when you deliver, but unless your physician has required this time off before-hand you will not receive any benefits for this 4 week leave of absence. PS: I had two children and worked up to the date of delivery. I know it's tiring in the last weeks but that is normal pregnancy, not a complication of pregnancy. Good luck!
