Here is a typical job description below. Besides accounting or finance training the job will require learning a lot about the business and a good deal of interaction with department heads and I.T. personnel.

Statement of the Job:
The key role of this position is to provide support to the Director of Budget and the Chief Financial Officer inclusive of budgets, position management, and preparation of relevant materials, GL reports, and training. The budget analyst will manage the input of budgets with position management including various projects, data collection, and writing and editing reports. The budget analyst will also oversee authorization and administering of security access to financials in PeopleSoft. This position entails working with personnel on various levels which requires proficient diplomatic skills in communicating financially sensitive problems and or issues. In addition to strong organizational skills, this position requires the ability to set work priorities and participate as a member of an office team.
III. Essential Functions:
1. Manages the Position Management and financial data accurately and on a regular basis using established University of Maine System operating procedures and guidelines.
2. Assist the Budget Director and Chief Financial Officer with financial information retrieval from PeopleSoft Financial applications and reports, including Human Resource data.
3. Communicate directly with financial managers and or deans and directors with matters pertaining to Position Management and or operating budgets.
4. Communicate directly with Human Resources with matters pertaining to Position Management and data integrity.
5. Establish meaningful budgetary practices and procedures, including issuance of memos to financial managers, advising and counseling regarding issues with budgets and assistance in resolving them.
6. Oversee setting up and maintaining security access for GL and reporting for staff, including collaborating with Sponsored Programs Office on security as needed.
7. Collaborate with staff in the Offices of Sponsored Programs and University Advancement in the set up of General Ledger department identifications in PeopleSoft so that financial operations are in sync.
8. Assist the Budget Director in the facilitation of workshops and trainings at the campus level pertaining to fiscal operations, including PeopleSoft.
9. Develop, implement, and manage financial programs including special project materials and design.
10. Oversee the process of the mandatory time and effort reporting in an efficient and effective manner. These soft money (grant/contract) reports are subject to external audit review each year which requires an organized system of disbursing and filing for retrieval.
