Question:
My company has lots of dept wide meetings saying how great everything is, how we're bucking the trend in the industry and actually turning a profit, unlike our competitors this is coming from all levels from President to managers. But then they have individual meets with each of use and harp on every little nickle we're spending.
I've worked for this company awhile, they have never done this, even when they were saying things were bad, they never spoke to me about a $10 expendature, now things are good but they question $10 or 3 miles of business travel?? I don't get it.
Moral is at an all time low, everyone is walking on egg shells, and it just seems wrong. So are they lying to us to keep moral up and failing miserably, or is there something else to it?

Sounds to me like your company is being purchased by someone or something else. As a consultant Ive worked with a ton of companies and generally speaking when the mgt team is watching pennies as you have described, ownership is changing.
It could be a new attempt at turning even more profits by cutting expenditures. Granted, when the tradeoff is morale it may not be worth it (depending on priorities). I'd guess bosses don't care much about morale so long as they are making as much money as possible, but I don't actually know
