Question:
Answers:
they're not competing, technically...
the private couriers, DHL, FedEx, UPS, and others are offering a different product.
Individualized, trackable package delivery from point A to point B, with insurance and guarantees of delivery on time.
USPS on the other hand, offers government subsidized delivery of letters, parcels and packages, with no guarantee of delivery,(without paying more), no insurance of contents (without paying more) and no time frames of delivery.
If they were hurting because of the competition from the Postal Service, I'm sure they would shut down their businesses. but I personally prefer fedEx to the USPS anyday.
It's fair enough. I don't trust the postal service with important documents and packages. I send them Fed-Ex.
My mail service at home is lousy, and has been for 2 years.
I've dealt with 2 Postmasters and they are very defensive and very nasty with me when I complain that our carrier doesn't deliver mail on our street or delivers the wrong mail to my home, and that my neighbors are stopping by with MY mail!
If Fed-Ex makes a mistake, they make a genuine effort to correct the problem.
DHL is subsidized by the German government..Deutsche Post.
What isn't fair is that UPS and FedEx are competing on a global scale with nationally subsidized carriers in other countries who are reluctant to open their countries up to competition.
USPS actually subcontracts a good chunk of their work to FedEx. The big FedEx trucks and planes are used to move quite a bit of US Mail from city to city.
USPS receives limited funds from the federal government, most of the funds they receive covers the cost of free mail delivery of government and charity organizations(delivery of mail to servicemen deployed overseas is very expensive). The USPS is one of the few government offices that pays for its own way. And they would be more efficient if they were allowed to close post offices in areas that have limited use or allowed to eliminate Saturday deliveries and were allowed to provide the services of private carriers in a competitive market. You will note that private carriers do not offer next day delivery or Saturday deliver without a premium price.
If you notice the private carriers are not interested in delivering door to door letters/bills/newspapers/magaz... on daily bases. To me the USPS is the best buy if you do not need next day delivery(Express Mail is available only in limited markets) or if you need pick-up of the package.
