Vodafone USES 3G technology, they don't develop it. This is not to say that they aren't a good investment, however, I would have to question why they paid several billion pounds for the 3G license, just for the UK - it doesn't exactly smack of common sense.
Ericsson is easily the world leader in development (and sales) of 3G infrastructure. Most of the US market is using Ericsson infrastructure and, more importantly, the engineering services provided to build out and maintain these networks. They are also innovators, not only on the technical services and products that they provide to operators (like Vodafone), but also to the business side, developing enterprise systems and so on, so that operators can provide more services to end users and to businesses as well.
To be fair, Siemens and Nokia are also strong contenders and as any good analyst will tell you, it's a good idea to have diversity in your investments.
