1st class stamped letter did not reach destination. had to cancel cheque. what to do?

Question:
3 weeks ago i sent a cheque to pay for an item from ebay. i contacted the seller and they told me they had not recieved it yet. so i rang my bank and had to cancel the cheque (cost me £10 to cancel!).

I sent the letter using a normal 1st class stamp. Is there any way to find out where my cheque went. (i put my address on the back of the letter in case it did not deliver). Can i get compensation for my losses from the mail company? If so how? Thanks for any advise you can give me?

ps. i usually pay via paypal but the seller would not accept this method so i had no choice but to send a cheque (better then cash/postal order as i could stop it, but i will never send a cheque via mail again).

Answers:
Does UK postal service have any kind of delivery confirmation that the recipient has to sign to get the envelope? - That would help
It depends on how heavy your article of mail was, where it was going, and if that First Class Stamp is still worth as a First Class Stamp.

Since I do not know what country you are in, I can't help you very much.

I do know, that in the US, if you want your mail to be insured, tracked, or have delivery confirmation, the price goes up to $15 USD. A first class stamp is not worth nearly that much.
Therefore, no compensation is given to you, and ou don't know where your mail is.
