In the UK, does a postal order cost more money than the original amount?

Question:
how much? is it a percentage? or a small fixed fee?

for example: if i want to send £100 as a postal order, do they charge me a small fee (so i pay 100+a fee) or its a percentage of the amount like 10% extra ...etc (so i pay £110)

thanks for the help :)

yes it does but im sure they just make up the price because it changed with me every time
They do charge you more than the postal order is worth. Im not 100% sure how much more but i think its about 10 to 15%
Pretty much as you tell it the more you want to buy the more it costs
yeah cheeky gits!!! not sure what the charge is though sorry =(
Not sure about the UK - but here in the USA - I think the charge to get a money order is about one dollar at the post office and most places - or sometimes less at some convenience stores. So if you bought a money order for $100 - you would pay $101.

Yes they do charge you extra for a postal order. Why not just send a cheque instead?
As with most things in life, you have to pay for goods and services at the Post Office! From September 1st 2007, things will change slightly; the minimum value of postal order available will £.5.00.. and the maximum value will be £.20.00. When these are purchased in person at the Post Office Counter there will be a fee of £1.00. for this service.

Because of the current maximum cost of £8.75, a PO becomes a better cost proposition as its face value goes above £100. Its costs eventually falls to a low of 3.5%, making the postal order more attractive for larger sums of money. The current maximum face value is £250.
