Question:
Im 16 and I have a job. I have a bank account to deposit my check in every week. I was wondering if I can get an ATM card or a debit card even though Im not 18. A few of my friends have debit cards and they arent 18 but Im not sure its under their name.
Can I get an ATM/Debit card at my age?
Answers:
Yes, in fact you should have received one when you started your bank account. I suggest going to the bank and requesting one. It should arrive within 2 weeks, and then you will have to wait a few more days for your PIN number.
ATM card, maybe. Debit card, probably not.
There is no reason why you could not get this type of card at your age. Your not borrowing anything and just asking for the convenience of having a card to store your money. My profile under credit has more on these types of cards.
call or go to your bank to see their policies. not all banks issue cards with their accounts, which is kind of strange seeing as how often they're used. several 16-17 y/o's that i work with have debit cards from their bank in their name, so i wouldn't see why you couldn't get one.
By bank's regulations you cannot open a checking account if you are younger than 18 yrs old. Therefore you cannot be qualified for a debit card. But you could open a savings account which does qualify you for an ATM card. ( you cannot use as a debit or credit card.) The ATM card is only good to withdraw money from that particular bank that you have an account with. You cannot withdraw money from any other banks with this card. If you want to apply for a credit card you can try Capital one i believe they have a credit card for students who are not 18 yet as long as a parent signs with you. Good Luck!
