Question:
hi im in contract with aol for another gruling 17 months as the unfortunatly got me to sign there platinum package anyways if i cancel my direct debit in my current account and close my current account will aol then be cancelled and i just open up another current account, would i be doing anything illegal

Answers:
They go out of their way to make it real difficult. You simply need to be super firm and aggressive with their customer service. You might even need to call them more than one time to get it done, but you can do it.
I haven't seen the contract, but it sounds like it might be a breach to do that. You might want to check the agreement to find out if they're going to hit you with fees for not paying the bill or for cancelling your account. Why are you with AOL anyway? Their service sucks, their customer service sucks, and they sometimes block the URLs of competitiors (and who knows what else). When I surf the Net I want to know that I can go where I want regardless of my ISP's agenda.
It's not a matter of illegality. It a matter of contract law.

The AOL Platinum Broadband service has a minimum contract period and by agreeing to the service, you've contracted with them for the minimum period in the agreement.

If you find a way not to pay the monthly charge, you may be held to it by AOL.
If you signed a contract you are stuck and if u close your account, you could be subject to breach of contract. I am sure they will send creditors after you, ding your credit rating. Talk to them and see if you can buy out the contract. Sometimes if you can pay them like 3 months they will let you out. I have done this with other companies.
Hi. I tried to terminate my account with AOL two times, and on both occasions they tried every trick in the book to stay with them. They get really snooty if you tell them that you want to cancel the account.

You will be in for a rough time dealing with those AOL people.
The contract you made with AOL will stand. You agreed to their terms and conditions and therefore failing to meet your monthly payments will mean you have breached the contract with them.

In the cirumstances AOL may sue you for breach and also any reasonably incurred expenses as a consquence of your acts.

Contract is a civil remedy and so therefore you have done nothing illegal. However, under the Theft Act 1968 if you made the contract and had the intention at a later date of not paying then you may be guilty of obtaning a service by deception - although it would be almost imposible to prove in the circumstances.
hi, i used to work with aol technical support, and i used to have lots of people wanting to close there acccounts because of dificuties, you cant go to your bank and ask hen to stop the direct debit as they cant do that without aol permision (phone and see if you dont beleve me) the only way i know you can cancel is if aol change there terms and conditions (about a year ago they started charging for tech calls, as it was free when people signed on that was a change you coud cancel your account for) and no matter how much you shout and yell they wont cancel your account, however if you are really wanting to cancel you could say that you cant sign on for more than 5 mins at a tme, but only at night, they will send bt round during the day but it will work fine and hey dont come out at midnight thus making aol eventuallu cancel your account - i dont work for aol anymore, some smart *** decided it was cheaper sending out jobs to india, and because peple are stressed when they call they cant understand the agent and eventually hang up after about 20 mins (at a couple of pence per min mind you)
