Quickbooks is definitely the most popular, and then there's probably Quicken too, it depends what type of business you have though, that should help you decide, since specific softwares are good for different types of businesses.
I have managed business and now own my own company. I have done more accounts than I care to even admit, and I have used several different programs. My thoughts on Quickbooks is that it is the best one I have come across in my thirteen years. I loved the software and it's not hard to learn.
As a QuickBooks ProAdvisor my answer is simply yes. However there are some things to consider. First of all what is your business going to do. What type of business, sole proprietor, partner, corp. etc. Will you have employees. etc. All of the accounting programs seem to have the same type of ability to compile reports, pay bills, invoice customers. etc. The next thing to consider is that it is the easiest to use. I am also microsoft partner accountant network consultant and I have Peachtree on my laptop for those customers that want to use that program. I am familiar with a couple of other programs but in the end I like QB because it is so user friendly and inexpensive.
The next thing you want to consider after thinking about the first few items in this answer is what version. They have simple start, pro, premier, and enterprise. There are many add ons that integrate well with QB depending upon what you may need above and beyond the basics, how much inventory you have, do you want to create assembly items customize invoices, create estimates or just keep track of the basic cash flow.
The learning curve for QB will vary with the individual, but overall it is the most userfriendly program I have found. I hope that I don't go out of bounds here but if you visit my web site you will be able to get a general overview of the programs by clicking the links. My web site is www.candhconsulting.net.
Regardless of which program you end up selecting make sure you use the online tutorials and a practise company to understand how to put it all together. There is also a web site that you can go to, where you can hire a ProAdvisor in your area to teach you how to use the system. Their fees will vary but the training and support is well worth the expense, plus it is a legitamate business expense and can be written off. The end result is when it comes time to take your books to the accountant he or she will thank you for keeping your books up to date.
