If i work a bank holiday is it the law for me to be either paid double or owed a day if i work it in the UK?

Question:
i keep asking people and nobody seems to have an difinitive answer. is it the law in the UK to be owed these days or paid double, and if so how many? i do the rota at work and need to know if i owe people days or not,

Answers:
It depends on how many hours you work, who your employer is and how big he company is. If you work for a large name group then they will pay holiday money or give you double time/day of in lieu. If you work for Joe Soap down the road then you probably are not going to get anything because by law he doesn't have to pay you any extra. You should always get a contract of employment regardless of who you are working for and it should state clearly whether they will pay you double time, or lieu day, or. whether you are entitled to holiday money. If you do this with every employer then you won't have any more problems.
Hi, working a bank holdiay means you have to have a day off in lieu, or double pay.

Sometimes it has clauses written into the contract but all the clause can be is that you may have to work bank holidays (that doesn't get any employer out of their statuory rights of paying for this time)

ANY bank holiday worked has to be paid at double time at the least or same amount of hours off.
The law states that if you work a bank holiday you either have to be paid treble time or double time and a day off in leau
No it is not the law for you to be either paid double or owed a day. It depends on your firm's policy. I don't get paid for bank holidays, my partner does and a friend of mine gets a paid days holiday some other time.
Mel is correct - I don't know what basis the other answerers state you have to be paid double, etc for bank holidays. If your contract states you get extra pay or time off for bank holidays, then you do, but if your contract does not provide for this, then no extra payment is due.
Your statutory right is to 20 days paid leave a year, which can include bank holidays, but you have no right to take your leave on a day you choose - your employer has to agree all leave in accordance with the needs of the business.
