How to obtaing tax refund as a tourist upon leaving the country?

I will leave the country shortly and I would like to know if getting a refund is fast and easy...

What tax refund: Sales Tax? Income Tax?
What country?
You can only get a refund from income taxes...as a tourist you should only have a tourist visa meaning you were not eligible to work so if you paid income tax you were breaking the law.
The US doesn't have a VAT like Canada and many European countries. The sales tax charged on items in most states does not get refunded to tourists leaving the country.
