when you apply for PAN card, they do send you a mail informing the pan number in about a weeks time.
You can always check your PAN status on the website:

The PAN card reaches to your address by registered post or by courier and it normally takes two-three month time. You can file the IT return by mentioning that you have applied for the PAN number and you have to attach the acknowledgement slip for PAN card application. IT deptt accepts it.
I faced same problem when i applied for pan. they have informed me PAN no through email. so i contact them through mail and i evened phoned them. after that then send me Pan card to my address
if u have an recept of apply u can to the uti pan card link and chack ur status i think it will help u
